There’s one favourite destination for art lovers from around the world: Art Basel, the most prestigious international art fair. For the New York Times, it’s the « Olympics of art world », for the Parisian daily Le Monde it’s « The best in the world », for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung it’s « Art as its best form » and Vogue calls it « the most beautiful temporary museum in the world ».
Masterpieces and avant garde
Around 300 of the best carefully selected galleries from all over the world show high quality modern and contemporary art works. On show are paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, prints, video and multimedia art as well as performances by over 4,000 interesting artists. All the famous names are represented from the modern and contemporary masters like Picasso, Miró, Klee, Warhol and Jeff Koons to the newest generation.
Old favourites and new discoveries
Art Basel’s unequalled reputation is down to its high standards, wide variety and international participation. Some 90,000 artists, gallery owners, museum directors, private collectors and other art lovers gather for what insiders call « the annual family meeting of the art world ». Their interface with art and artists brings many thrilling and inspiring moments.
City of culture – Mecca of art
Throughout Art Basel, the cultural city of Basel takes a unique ambiance, reinforced by special events all over the city. Art has in fact always been at the heart of this lovely medieval city on the river Rhine. It hosts art museums of international reputations, sculptures in public spaces, theatres, concert halls and notable buildings designed by leading contemporary architects. Located at the borders of Switzerland, France and Germany, Basel is a transport hub and very easy to get to.
Curated by New York-based curator Gianni Jetzer, Unlimited is Art Basel’s pioneering exhibition platform for projects that transcend the classical art-show stand, including massive sculptures and paintings, video projections, large-scale installations, and live performances.
Inaugurated in 1997 and set in an idyllic park, the museum founded by Ernst und Hildy Beyeler was designed by the star architect Renzo Piano.
The Fondation Beyeler owes its special appeal to its combination of a major collection, fascinating architecture, beautiful natural surroundings and temporary exhibitions that match the highest international standards. It comprises some 200 works of Post-Impressionism, Classical Modernism and contemporary art and 20 objects of ethnographic art from Africa, Oceania and Alaska.
