Everyone knows makeup artist Terry de Gunzburg’s luxe line of skin and makeup essentials, By Terry. Her iconic Baume De Rose lip treatment has a cult following among fashion insiders and red carpet fixtures alike, making her a legend among the the bold-faced names of the world. She will share with you her beauty secrets, how she started in the industry, her drive and the makeup tips she thinks every girl needs to live by.

Terry de Gunzburg founded her label, By Terry, in 1998, while she was still the creative director of YSL Beauté. She prizes sophisticated products that are intuitive, are a pleasure to use and become absolutely essential to their users.

 

It was on a whim that Ms. de Gunzburg began her beauty career in 1975. She had been studying medicine, and then art, in Paris, when she decided to take a course with beauty doyennes Maria and Rosy Carita, the sisters behind the famed Carita salon on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Ms. de Gunzburg eventually became a makeup artist, working with top photographers, like David Bailey and Helmut Newton.

 

In 1985, she was hired by Yves Saint Laurent to develop the brand’s cosmetic line. Seven years later, she produced her crowning achievement: Touche Éclat, the brush-on concealer-highlighter hybrid that’s often referred to as “8 hours of sleep in a tube” and remains a best-seller for the brand.

 

“From YSL, I learned not only the essence of how to anticipate women’s needs, but to create unexpected textures and formulas,” said Ms. de Gunzburg. And she learned to stand her ground. She defends By Terry’s steep prices as necessary to offset the cost of research and development. “You can have an average wine,” she said. “But to be a connoisseur, to make a Château Margaux, it’s a real commitment.”
