The Visit – or The Old Lady Comes to Call

In the town of Slurry, New York, post-war recession has bitten.
Claire Zachanassian, improbably beautiful and impenetrably terrifying, returns to her hometown as the world’s richest woman.
The locals hope her arrival signals a change in their fortunes, but only if they are ready to agree to a terrible demand she is making.

This German drama which explores themes of cynicism, hypocrisy and greed, based on a play by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, adapted by Tony Kushner, who transports the story to mid-20th-century USA. With a prestigious cast and creative team and a timely story of values versus greed, The Visit is an enticing addition to the National Theatre’s 2020 season.
